Dedicated to the idea of learning by doing, the Hurrah Players provides a joyous learning experience for children of all ages. Classes include acting, dancing, singing, musical theatre and stage craft, all of which serve to build artistic and creative skills.

This instruction is then translated into a hands-on educational experience through the mounting of four main-stage productions per season. Students have the opportunity to join in these productions, fulfilling their personal dreams and carrying the audience to their own “dream” state.

Hurrah Players was created by Hugh Copeland, a Perquimans County native, in 1984 to train young actors and put them on stage in full Broadway-style productions. The group is based in Norfolk, Va.

The Summer Breeze concert series for 2008 was quite successful. They drew good-sized crowds who enjoyed the music in person and, later on Radio Cafe Hertford 103. It was our pleasure to put the music on our web site for one and all to enjoy.

The music was quite a variety. The opening act was Connected which did just that with the audience. Following that jazzy presentation there was bluegrass by Strings Attached – and those attached strings sounded good.

The closer was the 2008 Gospel Festival with music by the Locust Grove AME Church Choir, The Blessing Boys of Hertford United Methodist Church, Cherry Alexander from Warren’s Grove Church, and the Holy Trinity Community Church Male Chorus.

It was an excellent cross-section of gospel music climaxed by the outstanding men from Holy Trinity.

The first two concerts had to be moved to the Recreation Center, but the gospelers did perform at the Newbold-White House site on a perfect-weather day.

Our thanks to the performers, the attendees, and to those who contributed their talents. Thanks from Radio Cafe Hertford 103. Frank Roberts

Frankly Speaking with Frank Roberts:
Todays guest is Senator Fred Smith who is seeking the Republican nomination for Governor of North Carolina.

[display_podcast]

“Clear Vision, Straight Talk. Proven Conservative Leadership” is the basis of the Senator’s 2008 Gubernatorial campaign. About Fred Smith

“I’m not a politician; I’m a CEO who ran for public office five years ago. In the world I live in, we deal with straight talk and clear vision.”

The principles that have guided Fred Smith are grounded in his parent’s strong influence and his childhood experiences growing up at the Methodist Orphanage in Raleigh, NC.

Fred’s father was a teacher and coach there, and his mom served as a cottage “housemother.” As a child, Fred played football and baseball, delivered a morning paper route, and was active in athletics, church programs and the Boy Scouts. While attending Raleigh’s Broughton High School, Fred won a football scholarship to attend Wake Forest University. Subsequently, he worked his way through Wake Forest Law School where he graduated with honors in 1966.

Senator Smith served his country as a Captain in the United States Army JAG Corps for four years after law school. In the years that followed, Fred Smith became a successful attorney, entrepreneur, farmer/cattleman and homebuilder. Today, Senator Smith’s family businesses provide over 600 jobs in Wake and Johnston Counties.

Fred is a committed father and husband to his five children and his wife Ginny. The Smith family is also active in the First Baptist Church of Clayton, where Fred is a Sunday school teacher. The Smiths have a strong commitment to their community — often involving both their businesses and their individual interests.

Since assuming office in the State Senate, Smith has worked to implement his positive agenda of creating jobs, improving education, and protecting family values. Most recently, Senator Smith has joined with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to fight for a critical east-west transportation corridor, support an Amendment to the state Constitution defending marriage, and set spending priorities with a Taxpayer Protection Act. Fred’s leadership has been applauded by conservatives across North Carolina.

Today is Thursday, and old Hollywood friend, Darwin Porter, returns to Frankly Speaking to talk about, among other things, his new book, an update on the old, very revealing, “Hollywood Babylon.”

He is always thought-provioking, fascinating, and fun.

One of Darwin many books The Secret Life of Humphrey Bogart: The Early Years (1899-1931) listed above;

From the Author: “It was an idyllic setting, a picture postcard of Victorian life that still thrived in America before its last vestiges were swept away by the…”

From Publishers Weekly Claiming to explore the “young, hot and horny Bogart,” former Miami Herald bureau chief Porter has penned a salacious account of the actor’s salad days. The book drips with gossipy tidbits from Bogart’s years on Broadway and in early Hollywood. For example, Porter (Hollywood’s Silent Closet; Midnight in Savannah; etc.) says Bogart worked undercover for Howard Hughes, procuring male escorts for the business tycoon.

He also charges that Bogart brought Jean Harlow to Mexico for a secret abortion (it was supposedly Hughes’s baby); and gives lots of steamy details about Bogart’s own sex life, including trysts with Tallulah Bankhead, Marlene Dietrich, Barbara Stanwyck and Bette Davis. Heavy on obscenity-ridden dialogue and light on official sourcing (Porter bases much of the book on the papers of Bogart’s friend Kenneth MacKenna), this book might appeal to Bogart junkies, but readers seeking an extensive, credible biography should look elsewhere. 64 photos.

Now Playing Books for Christmas. That’s the subject of our book expert, Melanie James. She also talks about the value of publications autographed by the writers. Other subjects are the multitudinous books from Dr. Seuss.

Carolina Moon is the passion (well, aside from husband and child) of Melanie James, attorney at law and bibliomaniac. In 2003, Melanie and her husband bought a building to house their businesses. It was a rather large building, offering far more space than needed for offices. The bibliomaniac seized the moment and the additional space (notwithstanding objections of husband), fulfilling a long-standing dream of owning a bookstore, and thus launching a second career.

Why Carolina Moon?

In 1928, Benny Davis was inspired by the moon over the Perquimans River to pen the words to “Carolina Moon.” It has been recorded by many artists over the years including Perry Como, Connie Frances, and Maureen McGovern. So there is local history associated with the name.

Also on today’s show Wanda Stiles joins Frank, Wanda is a collection specialist at the Museum of the Albemarle. She talks about her fascinating job, and discusses some of the events of import at the prestigious museum.

Located in Elizabeth City, NC, the Museum of the Albemarle is the northeastern regional branch of the North Carolina Museum of History. Serving thirteen counties in northeastern North Carolina, the Museum allows visitors to explore the history of the oldest section of North Carolina, many times considered the birthplace of English America.
